This is the unofficial website of OccupyMissoula. Views expressed on this website are not necessarily those of the OccupyMissoula GA. This website is run by a group of volunteers attempting to disseminate information about the Occupy movement, and to provide online tools for the local Occupy movement to assist in their efforts.

  1. Sorry but you are going about this all wrong. Nobody gives a crap about your movement in the way you are protesting….you come across as another 1970′s pot smoking group of liberals…

    • Rudy , if “nobody gives a crap” there wouldn’t be occupiers in a thousand US cities in just a few short weeks. You might want to check other media.
We would like to have your ideas in the mix, come on down, don’t be afraid, we don’t bite.

    • I don’t smoke pot and I’m not a liberal. We’re also not protesting anything. Instead, we’re seeking to change the relations of power in this country and win some concrete improvements in the lives of people. I go to job each day (left camp this morning at 7:30 a.m.), pay taxes, vote, volunteer, and participate in the civic and political life of my community. You can call this a “movement,” but a better description is a group of people participating in the Democracy our Forefathers envisioned. Regardless of what people may think about Occupy, when citizens exercise their First Ammendment rights, they should always be commended–however that expression manifests itself, the outcome, etc. You should come down and join us! Unless you’re one of the 1%, I’d love to hear how the system is working for you.

    • I’m sorry your anger is misdirected. Think about what you are angry with in the political arena. Surely you have suffered some injustices. Come and listen to what others are bitching about and you may find others who are angry about the same things. Personally I am pissed about the fact that the labeling of food does not indicate GMOs, whether the food has been irradiated, whether it is truly organic, if the meat was raised in concentration camps for critters, and so on. The occupation includes that sort of thing.

  2. I don’t smoke pot, I’m not an anarchist, and I’m not even sure I’m a liberal – but I support #occupymissoula because I think EVERYONE can agree that big money stole our democracy. I want it back. Rudy Galindo apparently doesn’t, but is welcome to join us when he realizes that his democracy is gone, too.

    • “I think EVERYONE can agree that big money stole our democracy.”
Amen to that….I don’t smoke pot, either, and I’m CERTAINLY not a liberal. (I’m a Republican Mormon, in point of fact – which is about as UNradical as you can possibly get.)
The fact is, though, that our country is being run by corporations, much to the detriment of 99% of Americans. This needs to change.

    • We had a republic. Now we are an empire and we are no longer a republic. Which is certainly causing a lot of problems for us and for others. Have you noticed?

      • The raised fist has been used for decades and across the entire world to represent Communism/Marxism/Socialism. It is part of the logos for the International Socialist Organization and Socialist Workers Party as well as many other socialist organizations.
        I’m just sayin’
Be careful who your hangin’ out with. They may not be there for the same reason you are.

        • john’s comment about the raised fist logo is excellent. That old logo has too many emotional responses already built-in from its many associations throughout history.

This may seem trivial, but it’s hugely important because it symbolizes the movement. I appreciate that it’s the solidarity link with OW, but perhaps it could be phased out?

Kim spoke eloquently on a radio interview yesterday about how this is not communism/socialism or any other historical ism — that we were smart enough to develop a new and better system (councils, etc.). Good reason not to use an old logo.

Surely we have some creative designers among our group?
          Thank you.

      • Anti-intellectualism in an already ignorant society is a scary combination. It makes me think of the film “Idiocracy,” in which the future is made up of people so dumb and skeptical of intelligence that they degenerate to the point of no longer knowing how to water crops and are on the verge of starvation. It is a dark comedy portraying our society.

Two things: 1) Let’s not condescend and assume people cannot be talked to directly, civilly, and honestly. Let’s give people (ignorant or not) the benefit of the doubt and assume they can engage in civil, intelligent dialogue. Otherwise, we run the risk of proving true the old adage about activists: “We love ‘the people’, we just can’t stand people.” 2) Let’s be unafraid to use any and all words and symbols and engage people where they actually are: ignorant of something or not.

So, the raised clenched fist is a simple Google search away for anyone wishing to learn more: “The raised fist (also known as the clenched fist) is a universal symbol of solidarity and support. It is also used as a salute to express unity, strength, defiance, or resistance. The salute dates back to ancient Assyria as a symbol of resistance in the face of violence.”

Wow! After hearing that, the boogeyman ain’t so scary.

Finally, if Socialism or Communism espouse solidarity as one of their values and Capitalism is opposed to such a value…perhaps we have to rethink what we support.

  3. The cool thing about the Occupation, John, is that it is a free speech zone. Different view points are welcome and no one seems afraid of ideas. Unlike universities or civic space in the rest of the country. Even wacky ideologies like capitalism or Federalism are debated. You should lose your fear and come check it out.

    • I asked a simple question about the logo.
Chebob calls me ignorant and Troutsky calls me afraid.
I believe if you were truely open minded you would not be so quick to judge and attack someone else.
It seems you have already judged me as unsupportive of your movement and I have said nothing negative about it.
It makes me wonder who is really afraid and of what?

  4. Is there a way for those of us who are in solidarity, but not there every day to know when there is a need, like food, tarps etc. My church group is anxious to help, but doesn’t know how.

  5. This is a good first step to changing the way America views and handles its government, and hopefully after years of negotiations maybe something good will happen for its citizens. I hope all your efforts are worth at least one good change for America! Thank you.

    • Originally they were privately donated, until they were knocked over and the donor took them back. Now, the Missoula county taxpayers get to pay for them
