Chat

We’re working on a direct embed. perseverance furthers… maybe.

Meanwhile here are some things we are learning about making Tiny Chat work best…

1)  Please choose “Press to Talk” instead of “Open Microphone”
2)  Please use headphones if you can, it will reduce echos for the rest of us
3) If there seems to be a lot of lag, echos, etc, please turn off your video/audio and see if the room improves . Sometimes it is better with only one video at a time.  In some cases, we can take turns. If you have something to say, just type it in the chat that you would like a turn at speaking via video.
3)  This is experimental, so please be patient.  We have had some great TinyChat experiences where everything goes smoothly, but sometimes the tech just doesn’t work.  If there are other group chat services that you know work well, please let us know.  Meanwhile, let’s see if we can put this one to use for us, but don’t give up if this didn’t work today.  We will continue to try to find ways to do online meetings and chats.

      • The raised fist has been used for decades and across the entire world to represent Communism/Marxism/Socialism. It is part of the International Socialist Organization and Socialist Workers Party logos as well as many other socialist organizations.
        I’m just sayin’
Be careful who you hangout with. The guy next to you may be there for a totally different reason than you are.

  1. why are we touting that we have been linked on moveon.org?!? moveon.org is part of the problem, not part of the solution! moveon is committed to the re-election of obama, reid, pelosi, and all democrats. um… that’s not exactly the change we are committed to

        • it just seems like we’re really for change, or we’re not… the moveon organizations are part of the democratic corporations, no different than fox news is for the republicans

        • Well, “the99 percent”, either MoveOn and all other political organizations’ members are part of the 99% or they are part of the 1%. I happen to know that the local folks in the local moveon chapter are not part of the 1%

Having said that, one of the admins here posted this because the local unions asked us to post it. They have supported us as we organized the first GA and rally, and have been here with us since. Because the local unions are affiliated with the local moveon folks you would have us do what? Ostracize them?

If an organization wants to support the Occupy movement who is going to tell them they can’t? And who is this “we” you refer to? Most of the people in the Occupy movement I have worked and met with embody change. “Hope and Change” is a hollow political slogan of the past.

So if you’re asking me to censor other contributors’ posts here, I can’t do that. If you want to make a proposal to the GA airing your concerns about affiliations, the next GA is tonight at 5:30.

  2. i said “we” because i felt an affinity to the occupy organizations in general and the local one in particular. i have been talking about the national movments in class and at work. maybe i’m not welcome

  3. hi to ” the 99 percent” commenter above– this is a different Admin than the one who replied above. You are definitely welcome to participate. We dont have to all agree on the finer points in order to be welcome to discussions and meetings. The difficult work , in fact, is exactly this: Having a disagreement but figuring out how to come together. If you are concerned about MoveOn or any other affiliation or mention of other groups, please join our communication working group to help figure out how to best resolve that — you truly are welcome to come help figure out “How can we welcome the most members in, while being wary about affiliations?” or “How can we disseminate information to the group in an open and democratic way, while being wary about spreading affiliate messages that might not agree with our own?” Your concern is shared by many, and the way i see it, whenever a question like this comes into your mind, it can truly be up to you to make the change you want to see — we just have to be open to working in a different mannar than we are accostomed to. It might not be an “either / or” answer or a “yes / no” kind of thing– you might find when you bring your concern, a whole new set of concerns pops up — this isnt because you are “wrong” it is because we are all striving to find ways to use our voices about our concerns, and come to workable solutions that can help us move forward in the best way.

Ok so if that doesnt sound too daunting to you , just email us at occupymissoula@gmail.com to say you would like to join the communication working group.

  4. occupybillingsmt.org would like to know if you are planning or are interested in any statewide projects, meaningfull statewide projects like an initiative. Could you discuss it at your next GA and lets us know if you have any ideas. Its time to start think about changing the system in more than a symbolic way.
    Ideas:
Take away power from legislature to enact legislation that damages environ., etc.
    Limit on tuition increases.
    etc.

      • Good spelling there bud (and Im referring to you, not marijuana.. didn’t mean to get everyone excited)

Anyway its about time the county decided that enough was enough. What a soft letter though! It was pretty embarrassing to read, knowing that our elected officials would actually submit such a weak letter to the occupiers. As usual, they don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.

Honestly, I respect some of what you are doing. I just think you are going about it the wrong way and really are just wasting your time and taxpayers’ money. Its pretty crazy that some of you are still sleeping outside every night though. So props for that and good luck with wherever you continue the movement.

  5. This whole “movement” is just a bunch of stupid lazy jerks that think they are entitled to having what they need and want just handed to them. Never mind someone else worked for what they have . I hope all these government handouts would just come to an end, no more welfare , no more foodstamps. These occupy ass holes can just go to hell

  6. I was just reading in the paper on coming to a consensus (or not coming to a consensus) about breaking your camp and I had a thought…I went to Quaker School for 6 years, so while I am not part of the active occupation, I do applaud your efforts; especially in attempting to work as a group to reach consensus and present a unified front. One of the many things I learned in my formative years was that Consensus rarely happens without Compromise but that doesn’t mean everyone can’t win if you think a bit outside the box. So, this thought I had when I read the article was, “They need to Wavy Gravy this.”

Now, I wasn’t around for Woodstock, but I’ve watched a lot of documentaries and the one thing that came across loud and clear, the success of that concert would never have happened if it hadn’t been for Wavy Gray and The Hog Farm. Throngs of people, squished in for days, rain, mud, electrical storms, bad acid, no food…basically the perfect setting for a mass mob of violence and unrest, and yet it was kept peaceful because a few managed to remind the throngs that they were all one community. The Hog Farm set up a free Kitchen and concert goers volunteered to help run it on a rotating basis. And that’s just one of the things that small group contributed to that historic concert so many years ago. Of course, I am using the ultimate Hippie image to make a point here, and that is going to turn some people off, but the hippie aspect isn’t my point. The Community aspect is my point.

What does Occupy Missoula (or any city) claim to ultimately represent? The 99%. Ok, there are things scheduled for the courthouse lawn that are being held for who? The 99%. One occupier said the decision will not be made by “us” and this will end badly. Another asked what are “we” camping on this lawn for? Community events are planned, you are standing up to represent your community, what if you took that stand by volunteering at all the community planned events on the agenda for the court house lawn? What if you took down a few tents and put up a few tables and served free hot cocoa? What if you walked among the crowds gathered to watch ice sculpting and made sure everyone had a pair of mittens, or a hat or a blanket? What if, to be part of the 99% you had to reach out to the 99%. I am spoiled. I like my heating and indoor plumbing, but if the Occupy Movement asked me to donate instant cocoa, or spare mittens, or a scarf so that they might offer some warmth to those who gather for public events on the lawns of the courthouse, I wouldn’t hesitate to show my support with such a donation. After all, we are a community, even if some of our views differ. This is your personal movement, I do not attend, so I have no say on how you choose to proceed. But I am part of the 99%, I am part of your community as you are part of mine, so why not take your movement not off the courthouse lawn, but into the community who would also like to use it?

Just a thought. Best of luck!

  7. Hmmm, ok, could you be a bit more specific? As part of the 99% I’m still having a hard time figuring out exactly what “we” are seizing and how “peace and rainbows” has anything to do with working to bring the community into the fold of your cause. There is absolutely nothing easy about reaching a consensus. I simply suggested you broaden your thinking as a whole to get more of the 99% working towards the same goal. Demanding, taking, what is rightfully ours, if not defined more clearly, sounds like a group of rioters out to loot the town. I know that is not what you mean. Clarify and you may get farther. Behind every successful Revolution there is a clear voice, what the voice is selling depends on the aim. I believe your aims are sound at heart but undefined in language. There is a difference between saying you represent the 99% and actually having the 99% on your side, backing you up and supporting the cause. Community outreach isn’t peace and rainbows, it’s building your army. If you don’t have the majority of the 99% backing you then you’re just hanging out on the courthouse lawn, you’re not achieving anything.

  8. To occupy Missoula. It is time for you to leave. You do not own or have any rights to semi permanent lodging on our courthouse lawn. Take the time you wasted and public money you squandered on dealing with your septic and security needs and go out and find a job. And before you start whinning again about feeling too blue to go looking for work, stop and think about the other 90% of the populace who are out struggling every day to pay the taxes that support your sorry asses. Get out!!!!
